About Genetic Testing

What testing can—and cannot—tell you.

Pharmacogenetic testing looks at genetic differences that may affect how certain medications are metabolized or, for specific gene–drug pairs, the risk of adverse effects.
Results are one part of a clinical picture. Testing cannot guarantee which psychiatric medication will work, diagnose a mental health condition, or replace careful follow-up.

Some results may help explain differences in how particular drugs are processed.

Specific gene–drug findings

The usefulness of a result depends on the gene, medication, and supporting evidence.

Will testing identify the best medication for me?
No. It may provide information for certain gene–drug pairs, but it cannot reliably identify a single best medication or guarantee treatment success.
No. The pharmacogenetic testing described here concerns medication-related information, not diagnosis of depression, ADHD, or other psychiatric conditions.
Many tests use a cheek swab or saliva sample. The laboratory’s instructions determine the collection method.
Coverage, medical-necessity requirements, and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan and laboratory. Confirm these details before providing a sample.
Review the report with your prescriber. Do not stop or adjust medication on your own based on test results.
